What to do if you're stranded on the side of the road

If your car breaks down or you have a flat tire, you may find yourself stranded on the side of the road. While this can be a stressful and dangerous situation, there are some things you can do to help keep yourself safe and make the best of a bad situation.

If possible, move your car off of the road completely so that you're not blocking traffic. Turn on your hazard lights so that other drivers are aware of your presence. If it's dark out, you may want to set up flares or reflective triangles around your vehicle as well.

Once you're safely off the road, call for help. If you have a roadside assistance plan, use it to call for a tow truck. If you don't have roadside assistance, call a friend or family member for help. If you're unable to reach anyone, call a taxi or Uber to come and pick you up.

In the meantime, stay inside your vehicle and wait for help to arrive. It's not safe to wander around on the side of the road, especially if it's dark out. If you have food and water with you, make sure to stay hydrated and try to eat something to keep your energy up.

You can also use this time to work on fixing the problem with your car, if possible. If you have a flat tire, try to change it yourself. If your car has run out of gas, see if you can walk to the nearest gas station to get some more.

No matter what, stay calm and patient and help will eventually arrive.

If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road, don't panic. By following these simple tips, you can stay safe until help arrives.
