The first European settlers in Portland, Oregon were led by Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. They arrived in the Willamette Valley in 1805, and founded a settlement called Fort Vancouver. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. The Chinook tribe was the most populous group in the area at the time of European settlement.


The Lewis and Clark expedition brought the first American settlers to Portland. They established a settlement called Fort Vancouver near present-day downtown Portland. The first American school in Oregon was built here in 1832. In 1843, Portland became incorporated as a city.
